The Ghosts of Retail Past: What Happened to Brookdale?

What started as a look back at a mall became a dive into an entire shopping district: department stores, strip malls, a movie theater, and a Ford dealership.

How did it all come together? Why did so much of it disappear? And what comes next?

If you haven’t read it, check it out. You may never look at those stretches of pavement along Bass Lake Road quite the same way.

An Interesting Thing

Megalodon ate whales.

I feel like we sometimes move past that a little too quickly.

Smithsonian describes this extinct shark as reaching roughly 60 feet long. Fossil whale bones bear marks left by its teeth. This was an actual animal swimming around looking for something to eat.

Imagine being a whale and somehow still being lunch.

Play This

“Emergency” — Paramore

The mid-2000s are back. At least in my headphones.

There’s something about this song that makes sitting quietly feel like an inadequate response. Some songs you appreciate. This one makes me want to ROCK.

Play “Emergency.”

Something to Think About

How much physical stress can we reasonably ask athletes to absorb?

We celebrate speed, strength, and spectacular plays. Then somebody gets injured, and the conversation quickly becomes about when they can return.

I’d be interested in digging into how injury patterns have changed—and what training, playing schedules, and recovery have to do with it.

There’s a future article in there. For now, it’s a question I keep coming back to.

Before You Go

Apparently, I can spend a considerable amount of time researching an abandoned shopping district.

Whether this is a useful skill remains to be seen. But if somebody urgently needs to know where Brookdale’s department stores were, I’m ready.

That’s it for this edition. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday.
